My first impressions of the introduction were surprised. I knew little of what life must have been like for Muslims living in America. especially after September 11, 2001.
There is a definite amount of sadness in the author at how her people and her lifestyle have been stereotyped down into only a few opinions of a vast culture. I believe in the beginning introduction she tries her best to show the reader the good sides to Muslim culture and attempts to dispel the illusion. She makes a point to show the many things that have been critical in creating the image of the Muslim world and the Middle east. The story of her father shows how sensitive and proud he was of his culture. the story with the little children begging to hear him tell stories is ment to cast him as a kind man. The author considers it her duty and the duty of other Muslim writers to show the world the lighter side of being a Muslim. She talks about her grandmother who lived to be 106 years old and how she was telling her that she must show the world about the true side of the Muslim culture. I have known many friends who have been Muslim or some other form of religion who have broken the stereotype and made a name for themselves as individuals.
