This story intrigues me. I have very few stories from Haiti or the people who inhabit it. It shows how poverty and political unrest have shaped Sophie and her views the world.
She is taught that only her mind will pull her out of her situation and poverty. She follows with little question that this is the answer to her problems and strives to be the best student she can be. I am curious to see if she will keep this view as she grows older.
